Solid hardwood, made for lasting homes

Solid hardwood is a single piece of timber from top to bottom, and it carries a warmth and depth you can feel the moment you walk across it. At MC Flooring, we install it with a quiet, detail-focused approach for homes in Salinas and across the Monterey Bay region.

It is at its best over a wood subfloor - the raised-foundation cottages and mid-century homes common in Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Carmel. If your home sits on a concrete slab, we will often steer you toward [engineered hardwood](/engineered-hardwood) instead and explain why.

Species, grades, and finish

Red oak and white oak remain the classics for good reason: strong grain, steady performance, and a color range from honey to soft gray. Maple is smooth and contemporary, hickory brings character and hardness, and walnut is the choice for a quietly luxurious room.

Planks can be factory-finished for a faster installation, or unfinished and finished in the home for a perfectly flat, custom-colored surface. We will explain the trade-offs at your estimate, and show you real samples rather than catalog photos.

How solid hardwood is installed

Boards are nailed or stapled to a clean, flat, dry wood subfloor, with a proper moisture reading before we begin and time for the wood to settle into your home before it is laid. Straight lays are classic, while herringbone and chevron patterns add architectural interest to an entry or a great room.

The old floor is removed and hauled away as part of the job - see our [flooring installation](/flooring-installation) and [floor demolition and prep](/floor-demolition-prep) pages for what is included.

Staircases and finishing touches

A solid wood floor looks most complete when the stairs match it. We build and fit treads, risers, and nosings in the same species and stain, detailed on our [hardwood stairs](/hardwood-stairs) page. Browse examples of finished rooms in the [inspiration gallery](/flooring-inspiration-gallery).

Real & Solid Hardwood Flooring - frequently asked questions

With ordinary care, solid hardwood can serve a household for generations. It is one of the few finishes that tends to add to a home's character as it ages.

Not directly. Solid planks need to be fastened to a wood subfloor, so over slab we generally recommend [engineered hardwood](/engineered-hardwood), which is dimensionally steadier and can be glued down.

Factory-finished is quicker and more predictable. Site-finished gives a perfectly level surface and fully custom color. We talk through both with sample boards at your estimate.

Wood moves with the seasons, and Monterey Bay's fog and salt air make steady acclimation and a good moisture reading important. Done properly, solid floors perform well.
